The Rogers City Coal Plant

IMG_2140

I have been following a story that has been ongoing here in Rogers City and have posted parts to the story on this blog.  Starting with Part 1, I began chronologically detailing what has transpired so far in this small under-served town.  Between the local and nation-wide environmentalists and the concerned citizenry, it has proved to be very entertaining, enlightening and dramatic.

Please understand that my reports contain my bias as well as my opinion.

Part 1 begins in May 2006, when Wolverine Energy proposed a coal-fired power plant in the world’s largest limestone quarry in Rogers City, Michigan.

Part 2 introduces some of the local environmentalists and closes out 2006.

In Part 3, the local environmentalists start to distribute copies of An Inconvenient Truth.

In Part 4 I help argue against global warming theory.

The town gets a taste of outside interests and mounting pressure against coal plants in Part 5 and Part 6.

In Part 7, a hearing to include biomass was held.

Part 8 tells of the overwhelming pressure to stop coal plants  from the future Obama Administration.

Part 9 showcases the fight between outside environmentalists and town leaders.

Part 10 tells of the Michigan DEQ and the informational public hearing in early October, 2008.

Part 11 details the public hearings in late October, 2008 and the support of the townspeople.

Part 12 tells of the final public hearing on the air permit held in Lansing.

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and her 2009 state of the state address is the topic of Part 13.

The area gets some information on wind energy in Part 14.

Part 15 shows the degree of support from local and state politicians.

The Michigan Public Service Commission tells Wolverine they don’t need a coal plant in Part 16.

Part 17 tells of the new cap and trade legislation, and how Bart Stupak responded to my email about it.

At a public hearing about changing the measurement for emissions, the Sierra Club embarrasses themselves in Part 18.

In Part 19, local activists attend a clean coal rally in Lansing.
